Are Ostrich Feet safe for my dog?

Yes, ostrich feet are safe for dogs as their texture is like honeycomb therefore this has less chance of splintering as the density of the bone is less than a lamb trotter for example.

Ostrich Feet have great health benefits for your dog. These include -

Dental Health - Due to Ostrich Feet being a longer lasting chew your dog has to gnaw down over a long period of time to release flavours. This means plaque and tartar is removed from their teeth leading to a fresher breath and improved oral hygiene.

Mental Stimulation - Providing your dog with chews is great for their mental health as it keeps their minds occupied and provides challenges. When your dog is provided with a challenge this leads to happier and healthier dogs.

Low Fat - Ostrich Feet have a low fat content which is great for dogs that need a lower calorie diet. Therefore they can still enjoy treats without compromising on their enjoyment.

Hypoallergenic - Ostrich is a novel protein meaning dogs are less likely to have allergies or sensitivities to this protein. Therefore these are great treats for all dogs especially ones that are sensitive to your typical proteins e.g chicken.

High Protein - Giving your dog high protein is great for aiding in muscle recovery and energy levels. This enhances their diet and leads to better overall health.

What can I do to ensure safe eating?

In order to make Ostrich Feet as safe as possible for your dog these are things to consider -

Correct Size - Make sure you buy the correct size bone for your dog. If the bone is too small this can pose a choking risk. Also if the bone is the correct size it will last your dog much longer.

No Chemicals - When purchasing make sure that the bones haven’t been treated with any chemicals in order to make them odour free. This takes out some of the nutrients and can be harmful to some dogs. Our Ostrich bones are only slowly air dried which locks all the nutrients and goodness in.

Supervision - Always make sure your dog is supervised while eating a treat as small pieces can break off and these should be disposed of. We don’t advise that treats are given when you leave the house or at bedtime as they can choke.

Heavy Chewers - If your dog is a heavy chewer sometimes dense treats aren't best for your dog as they can fracture their teeth. Heavy chewers will gnaw down on the treat hard to make sure they break pieces off and this can have negative effects.

Overall Ostrich Feet are safe for dogs if given the correct way and take your dogs needs into account. They are less likely to splinter than generic bones and provide high protein and low fat. They are suitable from 12 weeks of age and are great for teething puppies.

If you don’t think Ostrich Feet are a good suit for your dog then other treats such as Moon Bones, Buffalo Ears, Paddywack and Large Pig ears may be better for your dog.
